Stage 7. Taimyr
(EXPERT JUDGEMENT OF STAGE COMPLEXITY ON THE TEN-POINT SCALE = 8.5)
KHATANGA (71 ° 58') - CAPE OF CHELYUSKIN (77 ° 43')
Extension - 765 km
Locomotion - skiing

At the beginning of October the expedition "the Hundredth meridian" finishes the stage 6 in the mouth of the Khatanga river. The polar night is coming. It's cold. The endless tundra is nearly devoid of landmarks. 705 km of travelling. The locomotion is skiing. It's possible to use plastic cargo sled as torpedo. The movement tactic is simple: northward along straight line between certain reference points. It would be a good thing if sometimes (2-3 times along the stage) we had huts or other constructions as such point. After every 4-6 days of travelling - daytime rest. During the daytime rest it's possible to build igloo, snow huts, ice caves and so on.
According to the surface character Taimyr Peninsula can be divided into three parts: North-Siberian lowland between the Khatanga river and southern ledge of the Byrranga mountains (flat-ridging plain relief), the Byrranga mountains, stretching in some parallel chains across our movement (heights about 1146 m, pass on our rout in the region of the Surovoye lake is 300 m high), coastal plain (flat-ridging plain relief).
The large Taymir Lake (the length of 250 km, to 18 km wide, area of 4560 square km, 5 m above sea level, maximum 26 m in deep) lies near the southern ledge of Byrranga Mountains. Lakeside is intended. Northern bank is steep one, the southern is flat and sand-pebbled one. The Lake is iced from September until June. Maximum registered temperature is + 7 °C in August. There are loach, white-fish and lake herring in the lake.
The average atmospheric temperature goes down from -18-20 to -28-30 °C as the winter comes and the northern territory approaches. On drawing near the Arctic Ocean coast, the wind intensification is expected. Rainfall is moderate, but during all the period long snowstorms and snowdrifts are possible even when the weather is fair.
The fauna is represented by wild reindeer, argali, polar fox, wolf, lemming, ermine, and hare. There are also birds: snowy owl, tundra partridge. On the Arctic Ocean coast polar bear, walrus, seal can be met.
In spite of terrible climatic conditions in combination with polar night, it must be mentioned that practically there are no dangers along this stage. There is a gun in the outfit like a preventive measure if we meet polar bear (other predators are not dangerous).
Judgement of stage complexity is 8.5.
The expedition ends on the cape of Chelyuskin - the extreme land point of Eurasia and Russia. The cape was named after the participant of the great northern expedition S.Chelyuskin - the first who had reached this geographic point in the May of 1742. The small village of the same name is situated in the cape. It is connected by nonscheduled air communication with Khatanga.
